Beginner's Series: Introduction to Grants

This training will prepare you to effectively pursue and win grant funding. It will also help you build new skills that will make you more attractive candidate for jobs and consulting opportunities. Key topics during the training will include:

- How funders make grant decisions, and how to tailor your grant request to their interests
- Effective strategies for identifying grant opportunities
- Best practices for developing the grant proposal and telling your story
- Budgeting

Take advantage of hands-on activities that will give you an opportunity to practice what you are learning. You will also be able to pose questions to an expert in the field.

Presenter Jay Katz has helped nonprofit organizations raise $165 million through more than 1,000 funded grants and awards. He has also led trainings for hundreds of nonprofit staff members and prospective grant writers.

During this training, you will review three grant proposals, identifying strategies that can help you succeed, and red flags to avoid. By serving as a grant reviewer with a small team, learn how grant reviewers make decisions. For those who attend the morning session, this class will help you apply what you have already learned to a real life situation.

Note: three participants will have an opportunity to submit their own proposals for review.

- Learn what works in a grant proposal, what confuses reviewers, and what to avoid.
- Get a birds eye view of how a grant review process plays out, and how to improve your own proposal.
- Use the training to generate ideas for your own grant proposals.

Session facilitator: ince 2002, Erika Carlson has worked as a consultant and staff member in a wide range of nonprofit organizations including Intercambio Uniting Communities, Growing Gardens, Judi’s House, Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights, and Global Greengrants Fund, Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center, The Raymond Wentz Foundation/Ray of Hope, Longmont Chorale, and Grief Support Network. Erika helps organizations share their passion and articulate their outcomes to develop strong relationships with grant makers that leads to sustainable funding. She has written hundreds of successful proposals for local, national, and international foundations and corporations as well as city and state government. Erika holds a BA in International Political Economy from the University of Puget Sound and a MPA, with a Nonprofit Management focus, from the Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington.
